Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss (and me)

>> March 2, 2012

I like Dr Suess, I won’t tell a lie.
We share the same birthday, we’re tight him and I.
A creative creature, a word maker is he
When I grow up, just like him I’ll be.

He has a funny way to make us all think
His thinker is funny, combined with some ink
But funnier still, ‘tween ink jot you read
Squeezed in by the tittle, you’ll see a great creed.

Go places, be someone,
Try something new.
Have a big heart.
Now that’s a good start.

Be a Who on a speck,
Save your people from heck.
Don’t think you’re too small,
Don’t think it at all.

There are things you can find,
If you don’t stay behind.
Think out of the box,
Be smart like a fox.

Here’s the moral that sticks in my heart when I read,
When my thinker has thunked, and I truly take heed:
God made only one you, with a purpose and plan
No one else can be you,  now isn’t that grand?

So with a tip of my hat, I’ll close with a smile,
As Seuss once said in his Seussian style:
“Today you are You, that is truer than true.
There is no one alive who is Youer than You.”

"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord..." Jeremiah 29:11

Take Heart!

>> January 14, 2012

I have heard there are troubles of more than one kind.
Some come without help and some others I find.
I can whine and complain and have a good bawl.
But really some troubles aren’t troubles at all.

Sometimes a thought tromps all around in my mind,
Stirs up my spirit and grips my heart in a bind.
It’s the enemy’s tricks, I know it’s plain crazy
But my brain tends to get a just little bit hazy.

See that mole hill o’er yonder, the one that’s so small?
If I rant on and on I can push it up tall.
Then I’ll stare at Mole Mountain, with my hands on my hips.
Tears will stream down my face, and leave salt on my lips.

Hopelessness will move in, Faithless brings her tent.
I don’t ever recall posting a sign: “This Space for rent”!
But then I’ll remember, the WORD lives within me
I can hear in my heart: “Be thrown into the sea!”

I’ll scrape up the fresh dirt,
With a feeling of mirth.
I’ll fill a big bucket,
In the lake I will chuck it!
Then I’ll plop my bum in the sand,
Watch the sun kiss the land.
And savor the moment,
When I beat the opponent!

I have heard there are troubles
of more than one kind.
Some come from ahead
and some come from behind.

But I've got a big God. I'm all ready you see.
Now my troubles are going to have troubles with me!

John 16:33b: "In this world you will have trouble, but take heart! I have overcome the world."

No Matter How Small

>> November 28, 2011

Recently a news story was aired on KOMO 4 concerning embryo adoption. Today Pastor Joe Fuiten quoted a snippet from Dr Seuss in regards to the story of  Elisha Lancaster, a healthy vibrant little girl that is the result of embryo adoption. This all prompted me to use my "voice" to write this Seussian style call to the church.

♥ ♥ ♥
Eleven twenty-seven
On a rainy church day
I contemplated heaven
‘Tis my distracted way

Daydreaming facebooking
On my cool new smart phone
Hope no-one was looking
A tad naughty I’m prone

“Adopt an embryo”
Ears suddenly perked
Well what-do-ya know
It truly has worked

It’s a speck that is small
As the head on a pin
But a person after all
And could be your kin

Use them for research
Satan’s lie is so sly
His agenda is heard
“It’s not really alive”

A political battle
Swords have been drawn
Its’ not idle prattle
Time is soon gone

Please don’t harm
All the little folks who
Have as much right to live
As us bigger folks do

From the sun in the summer
And the rain when its fallish
Its our call to protect them
No matter how smallish

God’s people cry loudly
They cry out in fear
To the Prez who sits proudly
“We are here! We are here!”

Don’t think you can’t speak
Don’t think you’re too small
Don’t think you are weak
Don’t think it at all

We’ve got to make noise
In greater amounts
No time to sit poised
For every voice counts

For sure things will worsen
Its prophetic after all
But a person’s a person
No matter how small

"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; Before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations." Jeremiah 1:5
